AUBG Production
The Broadway Performance Club will be facing a new challenge in 2010 – a Nation-wide tour, which is going to cover the three biggest Bulgarian cities – Sofia, Varna and Plovdiv. For the first time a student production from that magnitude is going on a National tour in the country. All the cast members and the organizers are very enthusiastic and willing to give their best to create a unique and unforgettable spectacle for the musical lovers.

The Broadway Performance Club (BP Club) will be the first amateur group in the world to get the copyrights to perform that musical. As a tradition the BP Club is trying to keep a well-diversified cast, to show that art cannot face any cultural or ethnic barriers. The “Hairspray” cast consists of 65 AUBG students from 11 different countries (Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Russia, and the USA). They are all members of the BP Club absolutely voluntarily and are part of this project, not because they want to have any academic benefits, but because they want to share their passion for singing, dancing and acting.
The Broadway Performance Club is entirely ran by students who have outstanding abilities in directing, managing and creating a hard-working and highly-motivated team from an ordinary group of people. No professionals are helping for the making of the project at any level of organization. A team of five students (a producer, a singing and acting director, a male choreographer and two female choreographers) is the main “engine” that operates the whole project.
They spend numerous hours in doing extra work and taking care of all the details in the musical to make sure that the audience is going to get an unforgettable and breath-taking performance. Several other students are helping with the technical and administrative aspects of the project to minimize the chance of any mistakes to happen. The great efforts that all cast members are doing should also be mentioned because in order for this musical to happen they will need to spend more than 700 hours in rehearsals. All the work that needs to be done, however, further exceeds that number. It all might seem as a very hard and time-consuming job and, indeed, it is. But it is also a lot of fun, a lot of emotions, a lot of unforgettable moments and a unique, life-time experience. Being part of an AUBG musical does not make one sacrifice their good academic performance or social life.
All the participants in “Hairspray”, as well as the ones who took part in “Chicago” and “West Side Story”, are very active members in the AUBG community and very good students as well. One can find their names in the Dean’s list, student media, academic clubs, sports activities, student government and in any other form of involvement that the university has.
The Broadway Performance Club was established in 2007 by AUBG students, passionate about dancing, singing and acting. The club has already successfully performed two musicals in front of Blagoevgrad audience – “Chicago” (2008) and “West Side Story” (2009). The project in process for 2010 is “Hairspray”.
